A little history

The cemetery was established in 1862 and is described by Ipswich City Council as one of Australia’s oldest cemetery grounds.

Over its history it has also been known as Walloon Cemetery, Walloon Scrub Cemetery, Kircheim Cemetery and Kirchheiner Cemetery.

The land was originally donated to the adjoining Lutheran Church by W.H. Loose. The cemetery remained under Lutheran Church control until a Cemetery Trust was formed in 1913.

In 1959, Moreton Shire Council became trustee. The cemetery was renamed Haigslea Lawn Cemetery in 1990.

A cemetery with several names

The different names found in historical records are worth knowing when searching for family history. Burials recorded under Kirchheiner, Kircheim, Walloon or Walloon Scrub may relate to the same cemetery now known as Haigslea Lawn Cemetery.
