A little history
Land for the cemetery was donated by Charles Freeman in 1876. The cemetery has been known by several names over its history, including Walloon Cemetery, Rosewood General Cemetery and Rosewood Cemetery, before becoming known as Tallegalla Cemetery around 1920.
The first burial was a son of Mr Dart, whose coffin was carried around two miles to the cemetery.
Charles Freeman is also buried here, along with his wife Mary and members of their family.
Recent improvements
Ipswich City Council completed a major upgrade and expansion of Tallegalla Cemetery in 2025.
The works included new shelters, seating, pathways, landscaping, signage, fencing, an amenities block, retaining walls and improved drainage, as well as new burial areas.
The improvements were designed to provide additional capacity while retaining the heritage character of the cemetery.
