Legume Community Hall

The Legume Community Hall is an established community facility at 9283 Mt Lindesay Road, Legume NSW 2476, serving the small rural community of Legume and the surrounding area.

Tenterfield Shire lists the hall as a community venue, and it has been used for community events, health clinics and other local activities.

A community facility

Legume Hall is a longstanding community facility rather than a former commercial building or abandoned property. It has also been used as a polling place, appearing in NSW Electoral Commission records.

The hall is managed with the involvement of the Legume Hall Committee, which has historically received an annual operating contribution from Tenterfield Shire. In 2020, the contribution was $500.

Maintenance and improvements

The hall has had significant maintenance work over the years. In 2003, a Federal regional development grant of $16,845 was provided for restumping and foundation repairs.

Council records from 2016–17 also discuss roadside signage directing visitors to the hall and the nearby overnight camping facility.

Camping beside the hall

A Legume Community Hall campsite is located immediately adjacent to the hall.

The combination of a community hall and adjoining camping area makes the site particularly interesting from a broader community and facility perspective. It provides not only a place for people to gather, but also the potential for visitors to stay nearby.

Legume

Legume is a very small rural village in the Tenterfield Shire, close to the Queensland border.

A 2017 NSW Valuer General report described Legume as having a general store, fuel outlet, community hall and bushfire depot, serving the surrounding rural area.

The hall is therefore more than simply a building for hire. It is part of the small network of community facilities that supports the people living across the surrounding rural district.

Funerals and gatherings

A community hall such as Legume can provide an alternative to a church, dedicated funeral chapel or cemetery for a funeral or memorial gathering.

Its rural setting and connection with the local community may make it particularly appropriate for families who want a simple, local gathering without the formality of a traditional funeral venue.

The adjoining campsite may also be useful where family or friends are travelling from outside the area, although availability and current facilities should be confirmed with the hall committee before making arrangements.
