Fraser Coast Regional Council manages the public cemeteries across the Fraser Coast region, providing a range of burial and ashes interment options including lawn and monumental sections, columbarium walls, garden niches and a dedicated natural burial ground at Nikenbah.
Council manages seven cemeteries across the region, each with its own history, facilities and available interment options.

- Maryborough Cemetery, Walker Street, Maryborough — lawn and monumental sections, columbarium walls, garden niches and Children’s Memorial Garden.
- Polson Cemetery, Corser Street, Point Vernon — lawn and monumental sections, columbarium walls, garden niches, Wall of Remembrance and South Sea Islander Memorial and Cemetery.

Nikenbah Natural Cemetery
Nikenbah is the Fraser Coast’s dedicated natural burial ground. Council describes it as a place for people who want to return to the earth gently and sustainably. Learn more Nikenbah Natural Cemetery
Burial rights and reservations
Across Fraser Coast cemeteries, a burial plot or niche can be purchased or reserved. Purchasing a site gives the holder burial rights but does not mean they own the land.
Burial rights give the holder exclusive authority over who can be buried or have ashes interred at the site. Burial rights can be transferred or bequeathed, subject to Council approval and the applicable application and fees.
Council recommends arranging side-by-side plots at the same time if a family wants adjoining graves, as availability can change.
Arranging a burial
Funeral service providers can contact Council’s Cemeteries Coordinator to check availability and confirm the date, time and site.
Once confirmed, the completed Interment Booking Form is submitted to the Cemeteries office.
Council also provides forms and information for burial rights, transfers, exhumations, ashes interments, plaques and other cemetery matters.
Fees
Council publishes its cemetery fees and charges as part of its annual Schedule of Fees and Charges.
Fees are separate for burial rights or reservations and the actual interment. Other charges can apply for plaques, niches and memorialisation.
As an example, the 2025/26 schedule lists the purchase of burial rights for a Nikenbah Natural Cemetery grave at $1,500, with the interment fee separate. Fees should always be checked against Council’s current schedule before quoting a family.
Working with Council
For MyRest, Fraser Coast Regional Council is an example of a local government authority that directly manages both conventional cemeteries and a dedicated natural burial ground.
Its Nikenbah natural burial ground is particularly useful when explaining that natural burial can be offered within a public cemetery system, while still having specific rules around burial depth, materials, memorials, family participation and environmental management.
Council’s published information also makes the distinction between the burial rights associated with a cemetery site and the actual funeral or interment services arranged by the undertaker.
