The Conversation

The Conversation is a local community initiative run by Debbie Andersen of The Last Chapter and Rest Funerals & Death Care.

It is not a formal organisation or a business. It is simply a way of bringing people together to talk openly about death, dying and what comes afterwards.

The idea is pretty simple: information, not sales.

We run informal information sessions about things such as planning for the end of life, funerals, what the law actually requires, local palliative care and the choices people have when someone dies.

Why We Do It

There is a lot of information around death and funerals, but not all of it is particularly clear.

Sometimes people are told that something is “the way it has to be” when it isn’t. Sometimes families don’t know what choices they have because nobody has explained them.

The Conversation is about changing that.

We want people to understand what is actually required, what is optional, what their choices are and where they can get help.

There is no expectation that anyone will organise a funeral, buy anything or become a client.

What Happens at a Session?

There isn’t really a standard format.

Sometimes we put together an information session around a particular topic. Other times the conversation simply follows the questions people bring with them.

We might talk about funerals, cremation, burial, advance care planning, end of life wishes, palliative care, funeral costs or what happens when someone dies.

There are usually lots of questions and answers.

And sometimes it is simply five people sitting around having a chat over coffee.

That’s just as useful.

The Conversation

Who Is It For?

Anyone who wants to know more.

You don’t have to be planning a funeral. You don’t have to be caring for someone who is dying. You don’t have to be old.

You might simply have a question you’ve never thought to ask.

The Conversation is particularly useful for people who want to understand their options before they are suddenly faced with having to make decisions for someone they love.

No Sales Pitch

The Conversation isn’t about telling people what they should do.

It is about giving people enough information to make their own decisions.

We don’t think people should have to buy something before they can understand how the system works.

We explain. We don’t persuade.

And if someone leaves a Conversation knowing that they have more choices than they thought they had, then it has done what it was meant to do.
