Griefline
Grief can be a strange thing.
Sometimes it arrives all at once. Sometimes it takes a while to catch up with you. Sometimes you feel completely overwhelmed, and other times you feel almost nothing at all.
There isn’t a right way to grieve.
If you’re looking for someone outside your family or friends to talk to, Griefline is a national service offering support and resources for people experiencing grief and loss.
Griefline is now part of SANE Australia. The Griefline name and website continue to provide access to grief and loss information, while some of the services have moved into SANE’s support pathways.
What can Griefline help with?
Grief isn’t limited to the death of someone you love.
Grief can follow the loss of a relationship, a home, a job or business, your health, a sense of connection, or something else that mattered deeply to you.
Griefline’s resources are designed for people experiencing all kinds of grief and loss. You can use them whether your loss happened recently or a long time ago.
You don’t have to be at a particular stage of grief before you are allowed to ask for help.
Talking to someone
The Griefline number is 1300 845 745.
Since August 2026, calls to this number are automatically connected to SANE Australia’s Service Enquiries line during its operating hours: Monday to Friday, 10am to 8pm AEST/AEDT.
The service can help you find out what grief and loss support, resources and community services are available.
It is worth knowing what this service is — and isn’t.
It is not an emergency or crisis service, and the redirected service does not provide immediate counselling on the phone.
If you need immediate help because you or someone else is in danger, call 000.
For crisis support, you can also contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.
Online support
Griefline also provides access to online forums where people experiencing grief and loss can connect with others who understand something of what they are going through.
The forums are available 24 hours a day and are professionally moderated.
For some people, talking face to face or over the phone feels too much. An online community can be a gentler place to start.
You can read, take part, or simply look around until you feel ready.
You don’t have to know what you need
One of the difficult things about grief is that it can be hard to know what kind of help would actually help.
You might want to talk.
You might want information.
You might want to hear from other people who have experienced something similar.
Or you might simply want to know that what you’re experiencing isn’t unusual.
You don’t need to have all of that worked out before you reach out.
Griefline and SANE can help you work out what support is available and where to find it.
A place to start
Grief doesn’t follow a timetable, and there is no prize for getting through it quickly.
Sometimes the first step is simply finding somewhere safe to talk.
If Griefline sounds like it might help, start with their website or call 1300 845 745 during the current service hours.
And if you aren’t ready to talk to anyone yet, that’s okay too. There are resources you can read in your own time.
You don’t have to do grief perfectly.
You just don’t have to do it completely alone.
This page is provided by Rest as a starting point, not as a substitute for professional or crisis support. Services and operating hours can change, so check Griefline’s current information before relying on a particular service.
