Boomerang Bags Stanthorpe
A sewing group, but really it’s about the people
Sometimes support doesn’t look like support.
Boomerang Bags Stanthorpe is a volunteer community group that takes reclaimed fabrics and materials and turns them into reusable bags and other useful things.
But the bags aren’t really the whole story.
The group is also a place to meet people, learn something, contribute to the community and spend a few hours doing something useful together.
What they do
Boomerang Bags Stanthorpe, began in 2016.
The group takes donated materials that might otherwise end up in landfill and gives them another life. They make reusable shopping bags, free library bags for local school students and other items for community organisations.
They’ve also made casket liners for Rest’s Daisybox caskets — a lovely example of something ordinary being made from something that might otherwise have been thrown away.
Over their first ten years, the Stanthorpe group made more than 17,000 bags.
The group is self-funded and not-for-profit, and the people doing the work are volunteers.
You don’t have to know how to sew
This is probably the most important thing to know.
You don’t need to be a sewer.
There are plenty of things to do besides sitting behind a sewing machine.
People sort fabric, cut, iron, prepare pieces, help with the various stages of making a bag, or simply come along and be part of the group.
If you can sew, they’ll be glad to have you.
If you can’t sew, they’ll still be glad to have you.
You can learn as you go.
It can be about something other than grief
One of the useful things about groups like this is that nobody has to arrive saying, “I’m struggling.”
And gradually, without anyone making a big deal about it, you become part of a group of people who know you’re there.
For someone who is lonely, newly retired, living on their own, finding their feet after a major change, or simply looking for a bit more connection, that can be surprisingly important.
Come along on a Tuesday
Boomerang Bags Stanthorpe meets every Tuesday from 9am to 2pm at:
The Summit Hall
101 Granite Belt Drive
The Summit QLD 4377
You don’t have to stay all day.
Their invitation is simply to turn up for as little or as long as you wish.
You can donate fabric too
If you’ve been cleaning out the linen cupboard or sewing room, Boomerang Bags Stanthorpe can give some of those materials a useful second life.
They accept clean:
- fabric and material
- sheets
- pillow cases
- doona covers (not doonas)
- curtains (not lace or sheer)
- coffee sacks
- table cloths
- jeans and denim
- upholstery and curtain sample books
They can work with a small tear or stain, but materials need to be clean and free from mould, oil or contamination.
If you’re clearing a Deceased Estate , this can also be a meaningful way to pass on suitable fabric and materials rather than simply throwing them away.
A reason to get out of the house
There are lots of formal support services. And they’re important. But sometimes what a person needs is less formal.
This page is provided by Rest as a starting point, not as a substitute for professional or crisis support. Services and operating hours can change, so check Boomerang Bags Stanthorpe’s current information before relying on a particular service.
