A funeral doesn't have to happen in a funeral home
Most people picture a funeral in one of two places. A church, or a funeral home chapel.
That picture is so strong that families rarely ask whether there is a third option. There is. In fact there are dozens.
A Funeral is simply a farewell held with the person who has died present. That is the only thing that makes it a funeral rather than a Memorial. It is not defined by the building, the pews, the carpet or the sign out the front.
So the question isn’t really “which funeral home?” It’s “where would this person’s people want to gather?”
What the law actually says
In Queensland there is no law that says a funeral must take place in a funeral chapel. There is no law that says a funeral director has to own the building. There is no licence for a room to be a “funeral room”.
There is paperwork and rules for burial and cremation and we take that seriously. But where you hold a ceremony, if at all, is your decision.
Funerals at the Senior Citizens Hall
We have held funerals at the Warwick Senior Citizens Hall with the person present. It is a plain, practical room in central Warwick. It has a kitchen, tables and chairs, and it hires for about $20 an hour.
Nobody walking in felt they were somewhere they shouldn’t be. The family set up photographs. Debbie Andersen, the celebrant, spoke. People carried the coffin out to the vehicle themselves.
It felt like a farewell held by a community, in a place that belonged to the community.
Why this matters on the Southern Downs
Out here, the nearest funeral chapel might be an hour away. Many of the people who knew your person best live in the same district they did. Asking a hundred people from Freestone or The Summit to drive to a chapel in town, then drive back for the wake, doesn’t always make sense.
Meanwhile almost every town and village in this region has a hall. A club. A showground. Even a park with a shady tree.
Over the next four posts I want to show you what a funeral looks like in those places. We’ll walk through the small country halls like 03 Knowledge/Halls/The Summit Hall, Freestone Community Hall and Pratten Hall. How the practical side actually works, and what else is possible beyond a hall.
None of it is complicated. Most of it is just knowing that you can.
